The purpose of silage is to create a nutritious feed supply for animals. The harvested product, e.g. maize or grass, is sealed in a compact and airtight manner in a silage heap or silage bales, which ferments it and makes it last longer. The airtight closure of the silage heap is also important for preventing rot and mould.
